Whether you're planning a new home, renovation or extension, our goal is to make the design process clear, enjoyable and straightforward. We'll guide you through each stage, helping transform your ideas into practical, well-considered plans that are ready for construction.
No two projects are the same, but the journey typically follows these steps:
- Initial consultation
- Site visit
- Concept design
- Design development
- Council documentation
- Building consent
- Construction support
- Design & build (optional)
1. Initial consultation
Every project starts by getting to know you.
We'll discuss your ideas, lifestyle, budget and long-term goals, along with your site and any existing plans or information you may already have.
This first meeting is an opportunity to ask questions, explore possibilities and determine the best direction for your project before any design work begins.
2. Site assessment & project planning
Understanding the site is an important part of creating a successful design.
We consider factors such as:
- Site orientation
- Views and privacy
- Sunlight and outdoor living
- Existing buildings
- Access
- Council requirements
- Future use of the home
Good planning at this stage often saves both time and money later in the project.
3. Concept design
This is where your ideas begin to take shape.
Using the information gathered during our discussions, we'll prepare an initial design concept that balances appearance, functionality and practicality.
The focus is on creating a home that suits your lifestyle while remaining realistic to build and within your budget.
We'll work together to refine the design until you're happy with the overall layout and direction.
4. Design development
Once the preferred concept has been selected, the design is developed into detailed architectural drawings.
During this stage we carefully consider:
- Construction methods
- Materials
- Structural requirements
- Room layouts
- Natural light
- Energy efficiency
- Practical detailing
Every decision is made with the finished home—and the building process—in mind.
5. 3D visualisation & design refinement
Where appropriate, 3D drawings allow you to see your project before construction begins.
This helps confirm proportions, layouts and overall appearance while making it easier to identify any changes before work starts on site.
Making adjustments during the design phase is significantly easier—and often far less expensive—than changing things during construction.
6. Building consent documentation
Once the design has been finalised, detailed drawings are prepared for building consent.
The documentation is produced to meet council requirements and, where necessary, we work alongside engineers and other consultants to coordinate the information required for approval.
Our practical construction experience helps ensure the drawings are clear, logical and easy for everyone involved to understand.
7. Support during construction
Our involvement doesn't necessarily end once the plans have been completed.
If questions arise during construction or small design adjustments become necessary, we're available to provide advice and updated drawings where required.
Having practical building experience means we understand the challenges builders sometimes encounter on site and can respond with practical solutions.
Design & build — if you choose
Many clients appreciate having one experienced team involved from concept through to completion.
DesignWorx works alongside our construction company, Craftworx, providing an optional design-and-build service that keeps communication simple and ensures the original design vision is carried through into construction.
You're always welcome to use your own builder, but if you choose Craftworx you'll benefit from the designer and builder working together from the very beginning.
Why this process works
Our process is built around one simple idea:
Good design should make construction easier—not more complicated.
Because every project is guided by decades of practical building experience, we focus on creating homes that are:
✔ Attractive and functional
✔ Straightforward to build
✔ Cost-effective to construct
✔ Easy to maintain
✔ Designed to stand the test of time
